Lockerman Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes

September 20, 2023

6:00pm

 

1.       Attendees:

14 people attended including the PTA President, Secretary and Treasurer, Vice Principal Jeannine Necessary, and Guidance Counselor David Gibbons.

2.       Call to order:  Meeting called to order by Jeannine Necessary at 6:05pm

3.       Service-Learning Hours Presentation:

  • David Gibbons presented a slide show with details regarding service-learning hours, requirements, how they can be earned, and how parents can track how many have been earned.

  • Parents were informed 75 service-learning hours are required in order to graduate from any school in the state of MD.

  • School based hours should total 55 hours, the remaining 20 hours must be earned independently.

  • Independent service-learning hours must be pre-approved by the school guidance counselor.

  • Forms for Independent Service-Learning hours can be found on the Caroline County web page. 

  • Slides that were presented during the meeting can be found on the PTA Facebook page as well as the PTA website.

  • Mr. Gibbons stressed that the minimum requirement to graduate is 75.  However, earning more will help when applying for scholarships and with college.

4.       Introduction of Officers

  • Michelle Berggren introduced herself as the new PTA President

  • Keyana Hill – Treasurer

  • Marianne Sullivan – Secretary

5.       Budget Review

  • The budget was distributed with everyone present by Keyana Hill

  • Keyana explained that the PTA earns money through membership, donations, and fundraising.

  • Keyana informed the parents that a huge portion of the membership income are used to pay for state fees.

  • Prior year fundraising events included bake sales, Back to School Night, Spring Walk, spring festival, dine to donate, silent auction, Kona Ice and an online silent auction. 

  • The budget for the present school year was approved by everyone present.

6.       Fundraising

  • Michelle discussed future service-learning opportunities as well as fundraising. 

  • Prior year’s events will also be planned for the current school year.

  • The next fundraising event will the Fall Trot to be held in October at the school.

  • Michelle asked if anyone wanted to join a dance committee.  This committee would be responsible for setting up, decorations, chaperoning and cleaning up all the dances, including the 8th grade dance.

  • One of the parents suggested creating an 8th grade dance committee.  The PTA should provide a budget to the 8th grade dance committee.  The parents on the committee should raise any other additional funds needed for the 8th grade dance.
